Imagination Technologies Intros HelloSoft WebRTC Media Engine

Imagination Technologies, a provider of multimedia and communication technologies, recently introduced its WebRTC media engine, HelloSoft. HelloSoft’s algorithms enhance voice and video quality across mobile and tablet platforms.

There are expected to be more than 6.2 billion WebRTC endpoints by 2018, up from more than one billion today. Most of that is due to the rise in connected endpoints in general, but also the continued explosion of mobile devices. Using WebRTC – the open-source HTML5 technology that enables real-time, peer-to-peer communications over a browser – on mobile devices introduces some challenges, such as different servers and firewall provisions, and the fact that although that is the intended end goal of WebRTC, not all browsers across the board support WebRTC currently.

Despite the fact that Apple’s Safari and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer have yet to officially jump in the WebRTC game, there are plenty of companies that aren’t bothered by that. Companies like AddLive, WIT Software, Acano, TokBox and more have solutions that enable WebRTC integration into mobile apps and other browsers, and Imagination is the newest company helping companies bring WebRTC to mobile devices.

Krishna Yarlagadda, president at Imagination, said in a statement, “Imagination has deep expertise in developing media engines and related technologies, and our HelloSoft V.VoIP and VoLTE clients have already shipped in millions of devices worldwide. With this experience and leadership in building a wide range of leading IP for mobile platforms and other resource constrained devices, we understand the issues faced by our customers in bringing WebRTC to mobile. With our advanced algorithms encapsulated in an off-the-shelf product, we are enabling our customers to dramatically improve the WebRTC user experience.”

The HelloSoft media engine has the user experience in mind, offering features like improved speaker phone functionality, quality voice and video in lossy wireless environments, processor architecture optimization (Android, iOS, Windows, Linux-based OS), voice codecs support and leverage of hardware video accelerators.

This WebRTC media engine joins the HelloSoft range of IP offerings, including software SDKs, VoIP, VoLTE, V.VoIP and RCS. These offerings are especially relevant as 4G/LTE, VoLTE and general Internet-based communication take off.
