WebRTC World Week in Review

Web-based real time communications (WebRTC) is a rapidly growing field with lots of new developments coming our way in rapid fashion. Not even the upcoming Memorial Day holiday is enough to slow down the onslaught of news, and that's why with a long weekend at our collective doorstep, it's a good idea to settle in and take a look at the major events of the week with our Week in Review coverage!

First we had a closer look at WebRTC itself, and how the biggest developments in the field were not so much related to what products were emerging in the field, but rather, how companies and individuals would be using those products in the field. According to a discussion with the Daitan Group's vice president of marketing, Marcio Saito, the biggest developments in WebRTC would be related to use rather than products, as many products that do things similar to WebRTC already exist.

Next, we had a look at Dinamotxt from Openmind, a messaging app geared mainly toward tablets. While it isn't specifically WebRTC-based, it is offering up a multidevice messaging concept that actually appears to be influenced by the WebRTC concept. Dinamotxt recently found itself as an e-Tech Awards finalist at the 2013 CTIA show, and it also announced a new feature that allows it to text from any Web browser. Reports suggest that even more new features are likely to be on the way.

A major milestone was also part of the WebRTC news this week, as word emerged that, right now, there are over one billion endpoints that support WebRTC thanks to a steadily growing number of browsers and devices that can support WebRTC use. The combination of Chrome--and not even mobile Chrome users, just yet--and Firefox 22 beta users managed to push the number to that highly sought-after billion user mark. What's more, this is still just the beginning for WebRTC, as more and more browsers will be able to use the technology in rapid fashion.

Next, we had a look at the work that Crocodile RCS is doing with WebRTC, bringing the concept into a complete platform. The platform includes a variety of features like a complete developer SDK that includes session control, an open cloud signaling network, several sample WebRTC applications to build on, and both management and billing capabilities. Crocodile's platform is meant primarily for individual developers looking to build WebRTC apps or otherwise bring that kind of capability to other types of apps.

Finally, there was a new report about the upcoming WebRTC Conference and Expo coming up June 25-27 at the Cobb Galleria in Atlanta, Ga. The show has already been adding a variety of impressive names, sponsors and exhibitors, but one more was recently brought into the fold as the CTO of Mavenir Systems, Terry McCabe, was set to take a keynote slot. McCabe's lunchtime keynote will run on June 27 at 12:30 p.m., and is likely set to include a variety of topics being currently addressed by Mavenir Systems.

It was another huge week in WebRTC, sufficiently huge that even a holiday weekend couldn't slow it down. Our global online community was constantly keeping a weather eye out for fresh information and news to bring back here, so it will be a good idea to come back next week for all the biggest news in the sector, as well as every weekend for our Week in Review coverage!
