Spoken Words: Socializing Website MaxiAmigos.com Offers Voice Chat

If you are one of the many who dread talking on the phone, and highly prefer a casual text message to the potentially awkward intimacy of voice on voice, then this may be for you.

MaxiAmigos.com, a free site aimed at enabling user to make new friends and dates, announced on Thursday that its instant messaging function now sports a voice conversation option.

Rene Tapia, the founder of MaxiAmigos.com, says that the tool was added due to the site's dedication to helping people form “real” friendships.  “As the world gets more and more interconnected through the Internet, more and more people are making new friends, or finding a romantic partner through the Internet.”

Tapia continues: “However, offline messages, and even instant messaging, can take too much work, and too much time, and in the end, when you meet somebody in person, there might not be that much chemistry after all. But if you could have a voice conversation (without having to give your phone number right away), the tone of voice, the intonation, the way the other person talks, etc, could tell you in a few minutes if there is good chemistry, and if you would like to take this friendship further, and maybe meet this person in real life. Since our objective is to help people make true friendships in the real world, we are very excited to announce the availability of voice conversations in MaxiAmigos. We believe this is a big step forward in that direction.”

Ah, okay – that makes it sound a bit more appealing. One of the “good problems to have” caused by the popularity of online dating is that there are so many users that seem like the types of people you may want to go on a date with. The chance to talk to them quickly and upfront – even if to share only a few words – could be a great way to nip it in the bud – or see it blossom. Plus, there are plenty of appealing looking men out there with voices of gibbons on helium and it would be nice for single ladies to know this before going into a cafe to say what ultimately must be spoken: Hello.

MaxiAmigos is an application in Orkut, and is available on Facebook, MySpace, and directly on its website.
