Requestec Adds WebRTC Support to Zenon IP Communications Gateway

Requestec's Zenon IP Communications Gateway has become the latest in a recent string of announcements regarding WebRTC gateway functionality. However, while companies such as Huawei and Mavenir are introducing totally new dedicated WebRTC gateways, the Zenon gateway is adding WebRTC support to its long list of interoperable platforms.

The Zenon IP Communications Gateway offers scalable video conferencing, streaming and recording in any SIP and IMS compliant environment, allowing for peer-to-peer calling and switching seamlessly to multi-person conferencing and recording, using the gateway router, when needed. This carrier-grade solution boasts SIP interoperability with a number of leading SIP and IMS platforms, such as NSN, Ericsson, Genesys and Broadsoft.

With its newly introduced WebRTC functionality, Zenon is now capable of brokering calls between WebRTC and Adobe's Real-Time Media Flow Protocol (RTMFP), which typically enables direct peer-to-peer communications between multiple Adobe Flash Players and Adobe AIR applications. This enables cross platform interoperability, while allowing services providers to support desktops by way of Flash UDP and providing them with a migration path to WebRTC should it become necessary.

"We believe this is the leading WebRTC to SIP and Flash to SIP gateway available on the market today," said Ben Weekes, head of Technology at Requestec. "As we dug into existing solutions we could see they were great for demos but there was no decent bandwidth control or handling of packet loss for real life usage. Most of our customers require firewall traversal, which again, is not available in other WebRTC gateways to the best of my knowledge."

The Zenon Gateway — which is trusted by a number of Tier 1 telecommunications providers, including Chungwha Telecom, Time Warner Cable and Deutsche Telekom — is available via the Requestec Cloud or installed on site. For companies looking to build their own video contact services, client SDKs and developer APIs are available.
