Plivo Unites WebRTC and SIP

Let’s talk Plivo for a second. It offers a scalable messaging platform filled with features, flexible APIs and constant support. Not only does it offer great reliability for enterprises in need of a hosted environment for voice and messaging, but combined with WebRTC, it evolves to provide truly unified communications in the cloud. And just recently, Plivo launched a new SDK, designed to connect WebRTC and SIP together.

Naturally, Plivo already provides SIP support for its cloud platform. It offers recording, speech-to-text transcription and more, proving itself to be a great choice for voice and messaging platforms. It also offers an open bridge, which enables users to try and make a WebRTC call, as well as provides a great demonstration of the capabilities of WebRTC overall.

With the new SDK from Plivo, users can use WebRTC to call regular phone lines over their browsers, and vice-versa. This also means that call center solutions can integrate WebRTC without having to make any drastic changes, making calls easier and more convenient on both ends.

While WebRTC is still being developed, and while there is no standard yet, there is time to perfect both WebRTC and the SDK. Some companies are already experimenting with WebRTC, such as Vacasa Rentals, which is using the SDK from Plivo to integrate WebRTC into its FreeSwitch-based calling solution. If all goes as planned, this should save on bandwidth usage, support burden for the servers and local router and computer support.

“WebRTC represents the future of communications,” explains Venky Balasubramanian, co-founder of Plivo. “We’ve been hard at work architecting a solution that takes advantage of all WebRTC has to offer while ensuring that enterprise customers can leverage the investments they’ve made in existing infrastructure. We’re really excited about the result.”

This is a great step forward for WebRTC, and one that helps further unite it with all the ways we communicate. While calling phone numbers from the Internet isn’t an entirely new idea, being able to integrate it with WebRTC is new, and  it provides convenience and quality communications. There’s no doubt that WebRTC is the next step in communication, so it’s great to see it getting put to good use.
